An auto responder is a true asset to your online business. It saves so much time and is like part of your team. It is like having staff but without the hassle. Nearly every online business will have some sort of auto responder service in place. It is usually presented with a web form to capture names, email addresses and even full postal addresses. Those tools can help you put your business on autopilot. Auto responders are great to have, as they are designed to automatically respond to any email they receive with an instant response.
They are even used in offline business. If you ever go to a popular department store and make a purchase they will always ask “would you like to save an extra 10% today, just sign up for our exclusive card”. You then fill out the form providing all your details. This then gives the department store the right to get in touch with you about future promotions and products.
Over the years, auto responders have increased quite a bit in popularity. They are best known for their automatic email responses, which will save you a lot of time. By using one of these programs, you won’t have to spend countless hours answering emails again. If you have a customer base of many thousands, how long do you think it will take you to send thousands and thousands of emails? A very very long time. You create one email upload it into your auto responder account and then let it do the work for you. You will be free to do other things and always know that your customers have access to the information they need anytime they want it.
You can then keep in touch with your subscribers very easy. There are two ways to do this. Have a series of follow up emails going out on a certain date or every 2, 3 or even 5 days between each email. There are also broadcast emails which can run along side the follow up emails.
e.g. Let’s say you have 5 follow up emails going out. One goes out each week over the period of a month. That means you have a whole month of content for your subscribers going out for that month. Now let’s say something happens within that month. You have a sale, go on holiday, a new product, something happens in the news you want to share. What you can then do is send another email instantly by a broadcast email. This will not affect your follow up emails at all. They are great and I highly recommend you invest it as part of you business.
Invest! Invest! OH NO you mean it is going to cost me money. Yes sorry but many things are going to cost you money to have a successful online business. If you have been told that you can make thousands over night with no money, no website blah blah blah blah!!! I see these sites been put up all the time. They are just selling you the dream and not giving you the full picture. So who do I use?
There are many companies’s that provide this service. In my eyes the 2 main contenders are Aweber and Getresposne. I personally use Aweber. When I was deciding these where the 2 companies I was stuck between. So why did I choose Aweber? Well with a bit of research there was more people that used Aweber and where very happy with the service, and I am very happy with the service I am receiving from them. So I would recommend Aweber, but it is a personal choice and depends on your own circumstances and situation.
You can have a trial period using Aweber for just $1. That’s a whole 30 days to have a look around, test it and see if it is for you. You can actually sign up to Get-Response for free. This is only for having a list of 0-10 subscribers then the price goes up. Click the links below to be taken to the recommended sites and have a look around.
They will explain better at what they offer and there full price structure. There are many other company’s but I would recommend these 2. If you want to try others then do so. Just do a little research and see what will fit your needs

Great post on the importance of autoresponders. I personally use aWeber also and would be the first to recommend them. I have not had any problems in the nearly two years of service with them.
An autoresponder is probably the first and most important of all tools that anyone starting online will have to become familiar with. Not sure how you can even succeed at a business online without one. Don’t think you can!

Aweber provides way beyond just a Auto-Reponder services, I personally feel that they are by far the best email marketing solution provider in the market and
the most ethical, too. You won’t see them emailing your list with Aweber offer. They focus on 1 thing and 1 thing alone…how to improve their quality of their product and service to better serve their client.

Could I also add Wizard Resonder to the list of reliable autoresponders as thats what I have used for the last 2 years and have found their service and reliability to be as good as Awebers but at half the price.

Hi Craig,
Great post, and yes Aweber are a good autoresponder that a lot of marketers use.
As you’ve heard I am co-owner of http://www.WizardResponderPro.com … You wouldn’t have heard of us because the bigger companies do pay a lot more commissions (because they’re prices are higher), so we tend not to get too many promotions from the big named marketers…lol
– we even allow for the import of lists from other quality services, so maybe one day we could be of use.
But do shout me if ever you would like to take a look at Wizard
Meanwhile, I agree with the focus of your post – Autoresponders can and do pay for themselves in the time saving and professionalism they can provide for online marketers!

Hi Craig –
Great post on autoresponders. Sadly gettting an autoresponder is very much like the chicken and egg question for newbies venturing online. They are expensive and can be hard to afford when you are not earning anything/much and yet it is difficult to earn anything/much if you don’t have one.
My advice is get Aweber. Bite the bullet, pay a yearly fee (which keeps the cost as low as possible) and then focus of building your business.
Cheers!

Hi Craig, there may be some newbies out there that think yes an autoresponder is needed but I don’t want to pay for one so I’m going to get a free one. Almost all the free ones have advertising on them. That is so unprofessional. Think about it, you are trying to offer something of value to your subscribers and there are adverts all over the page.
Also I’d like to add that if you come across a free autoresponder service that states no advertising, don’t do it! One very important thing one must consider when choosing an autoresponder is how reliable are they with getting the email through?
With all the spam today autoresponder services that aren’t KNOWN will have a problem with getting emails through, especially if they are free. You might even end up being accused of spamming.
If you are going to start a business do it right, don’t cut corners. If you are serious there is only one way to do it and that’s the right way. Craig you are 110% about the top two autoresponder services.
Aweber is the big boy on the block, just like eBay is the big boy on the block when it comes to auction sites. I hope this is also helpful to anyone reading. Thanks, Craig for allowing me to comment. Terry Conti

Folks definitely need an autoresponder to be able to build their subscriber list and send them really cool things!! It’s one of the first things I got when I started. I have heard many marketers say they wish list building was their top priority when starting out, so I made it mine!
I used to use aweber, but the cost is way up there when you get more and more subscribers! Now I am with Randy’s “Wizard Responder”. Randy is the best when it comes to service and getting everything set up! I can only imagine what folks go through with all the email providers to get an ar set up!
Hope all is well and God bless! Good to see you in the challenge!

The important thing is to build a responsive list via the double optin to avoid any problem, I put a little bit of code at the end of the e-mail which was suggested by Barry Wells that show when they opted into your list, works like a dream.

There are so many ideas with email marketing. But the number one thing is to have a responsive list. I would rather have a responsive list of say 500 than a list of 10,000 that never opens your emails. Build a trust worthy relationship with your list is the key.

Hi Craig
One quick tip, I just noticed Daniels comment. Use your autoresponder to build trust, then switch to the Broadcast feature for promoting affiliate programs as these may change or disappear as Daniel found out.
One thing that amzes me about some of the smaller and even the very top autoresponders is that there is no option to change your email address! Often I have had no choice, but to leave, Infusionsoft is guilty of this and they are supposed to be the king of kings.
Aweber all the way for me, I used to use Trafficwave and still have a soft spot for it, my account is still active, but it has been quite glitchy recently.

I used to try and respond to enquries manually, but that didn’t suit my lazy nature. I ended up providing a rubbish service, so I prefer to pay and make sure it’s done properly.
Everyone seems to use Aweber so I just plumped for that without any research, I’m glad to see that the majority here also made the same decision. Although, I would now look into Wizard Responder as that seems to be cheaper, and I haven’t heard any problems with it.

Hi Craig,
An autoresponder service is your 24/7 selling person! Without an autoresponder, email marketing will be VERY hard and “useless”. Sending an email to thousands of people (not spamming but sending to people that agreed to email them) is not that hard BUT it will take more and more time every time and also your ISP will shut down your internet connection EVEN when you are not spamming.
Also did you ever wonder how much time and “lost” you would be if you had to send emails manually? For example having to send an email to your new subscribers every day, send the message #7 to the people that subscribed 7 days before, send the message #20 in 30 days etc.
Doing this to just 10 subscribers will be extremely hard not to mention IMPOSSIBLE! Think of what you have to do when you have a list of 50,000 subscribers?! You will need to hire 5,000 employees just to send the email!
Yes email marketing or following up by using mobile marketing, is used in the OFFLINE business BUT I don’t think that they will ever send you an email or call you just to share useful information with you! All they do it promote, promote, and promote all their latest products and offers.
Take care,
Andreas

Good to see that you are entering some giveaways and using the auto-responder to its full potential. What giveaways are you involved in?

Hi Amy,
It’s not about having a list of 1,000′s and 1,000′s subscribers. You want a very responsive list. Subscribers that are ready and waiting for your next email. JV Giveaways are a good start. Once you have built up to at least a list of 500 then move onto adswaps with other marketers.

Hi Craig, great article! I’ve been very busy lately with the Aweber system. It’s gotten a little more complex because of it’s new opt-in design forms. They’re definitely cool and customizable to. The longer you stay with Aweber the harder it is to ever leave. They’ve spoiled me
Be well, Steve D.

Hi Steve,
I have no reason what so ever to leave Aweber. There service is great and all the features are a god send to us marketers.

Hi Craig,
I know autoresponders are taking the world over. The robotic side of it needs work. I find that the human touch is missing from it. Aweber is the best and they are continually working at making it more humane.
Thanks for the insight.
Pierrette & I are here from the 100 comment challenge at http://theequest.com/?p=3018.It is so great to talk to real people that matter.
Thanks so much for just being you.

Hi Pierre,
Good to see you dropped by. How are you coming along with the challenge? Yeah you are right you do not want too seem like a robot to your subscribers.

Hi Craig,
I absolutely agree and my online marketing business would really suffer without the use of a good autoresponder.
There are also so many autoresponder services out there it can be hard to choose which is best for your marketing needs and price range. I personally use Aweber as their support is second to none but for start up businesses there are quite a few free alternatives, a simple Google search will bring up the most popular.
Regards,
Steve Wilkins.

Hi Steven,
With there being so many other auto responders out there, I suppose it comes down to personal choice. Time, money and other issues. It all depends on how the service firs into your business. I know many other people who have commented on this post like Wizard Respond. I can’t vouch for them as I have never used their service.

Hi Craig,
I finally got here!
Have been a little bit busy with this little blog commenting challenge that a bimbo from Australia created just for fun!
Actually truthfully I think it was a pretty good idea, just had no idea the work load it created for everyone. oops on that one!
Now that all the contributors are on board fingers crossed everyone gets around to everyone’s blogs so we all get the 100 blog comments together!
Now on the auto responder side of things. When I first started online I joined with Aweber as that was the done thing to do at the time. However since then I have now signed up with Randy’s Wizard Responder. Love them!
I still haven’t worked out all the features etc and am still in the process of moving my lists, however I will say the support that Pete and Randy give is awesome, plus they are perfect for the newbie online. The dashboard is pretty easy to use plus for @$12 per month they are perfect financially!! You can have up to 10,000 subscribers for that!
OK so must away and continue blog hopping in my sleep. I hope you have been enjoying the challenge so far and Thank You so much for being a valued contributor! you have been awesome!
Cheers
Jacinta

Hi Jacinta,
Great to see that you have made it over. Thanks for getting me involved in this challenge. It has been time consuming and other aspects of my business have taken a back seat, but it has been worth it. So many people have mentioned Randy’s product Wizard Responder. I should really take a look as it is nearly half the price to Aweber.
